CHAPTER 6
âHowâs the family?â I asked.
âTheyâre good,â he said. âThe kids are ready for us to come home.â
So he had children. Of course he did.
He had always been so normal. I was the one who was driven almost to the point of obsession.
In his defense, he hadnât had to be driven. His family took care of him while he did whatever it was he wanted to do.
Apparently that thing turned out to not be law school.
He held out a hand, palm up, across the table.
I recognized the gesture and reacted instinctively.
I put my hand in his.
âThank you,â he said, with a little smile.
âFor what?â Was this the part where he thanked me for not going with him ten years ago so he could end up with someone else? The right someone else?
âAcquiring this art gallery was one of the most brilliant ideas youâve had.â
I just stared at him. Speechless.
I was in mergers and acquisitions.
But he seemed to think that I had already done some work for him. He hadnât even told me what we were doing. Hadnât told me that he wanted to acquire an art gallery.
I just shook my head. âIt wasnât my idea,â I said.
âYouâre just so humble.â
He took a sip of his drink and I did the same.
âYou know,â he said. âYou could have done anything. You could have been one of these big shot New York attorneys if youâd wanted to.â
I just stared at him, certain that my mouth was hanging open.
âYes,â I said. âI suppose I could have.â
âSometimes I feel like I held you back.â
Something in his voice cut me to the core.
âYou never held me back Benjamin.â
He grinned then. âIâm glad you feel that way.â
âOf course I do.â I swallowed the lump in my throat. Being here with him. Talking with him as though there were no years between us felt weird and heartwarming all at the same time.
I took a deep breath and pulled my hand from his.
âOne last night in the big city before we go back to our suburbian lives,â he said.
âSuburbian?â I asked, the only word I could manage to get out.
âWell, Whiskey Springs is not officially considered a suburb of Denver, but the way itâs growing, one day it will be.â
âIâm sure it will,â I murmured, hiding my confusion behind my glass. I was feeling a little bit off-balance.
âIâll be right back,â he said, glancing at his phone.
âSure.â I sat there staring at the empty booth across from me.
I automatically reached for my phone, but then remembered that I had lost it. I know I had it when Iâd bought the subway ticket.
The only thing I had in my pocket now, in fact, was that odd ticket from the subway.
I pulled it out and looked at the back of it again.
Christmas Rewind Express.
What did that even mean?
There was some kind of expiration date on the ticket. In small print. Midnight Christmas Eve.
Well, I didnât need it. Iâd have my car and driver back in the morning.
As Benjamin came back, I shoved the ticket back into my pocket.
